A Korean "nightclub" is not a club
Bar, lounge, club, nightclub — four different businesses with different opening hours, different etiquette and different neighbourhoods. We sorted all 205 verified KONA places into the four types.
In English, "nightclub" usually means a place you dance. The Korean word 나이트클럽 (nightclub) means something else entirely — a waiter seats you, there is a live band, and it opens at seven in the evening. Getting this one word wrong misdirects an entire night.
The four types
| Type | Count | Hours | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bar | 144 | 19:00 → 02:00 | You sit. No dance floor. |
| Lounge | 23 | 19:00 → 02:00 | Loud music, small floor, tables you reserve. |
| Club | 29 | 22:00 → 06:00 | DJ, dance floor, cover charge. |
| Nightclub | 10 | 19:00 → 05:00 | Waiters, table service, live band, 부킹. |
The trap — they open at opposite ends of the evening
Show up at a club at 22:00 and it is still empty. Show up at a nightclub at 19:00 and it is already filling. Same-sounding word, opposite timetable.
Bar — the default
144 of the 205 places are bars. A Seoul night starts sitting down. They also rate highest of the four types, averaging 4.79. Cocktail bars, whisky bars, wine bars, beer pubs and speakeasies all live here.

Lounge — between a bar and a club
The music is loud but the floor is small, and tables are the assumption. Lounges are the busiest of the four by review volume, averaging 506 reviews. Dress for it — the door is stricter than at a bar.

Club — nobody is there before 22:00
DJ, floor, cover charge. Around half of the 29 are in Mapo and Yongsan — Hongdae and Itaewon. Doors at 22:00, closing at 06:00 is the standard, and the actual peak is after midnight. Four run until 08:00 or 09:00.

Nightclub — a different night entirely
A waiter seats you, a live band plays, and the room runs on 부킹 (booking) — the waiter physically walks someone over from another table and introduces you. If you are not interested, you tell the waiter, not the person. Nobody loses face that way.

So which one do you want?
- You want to sit and talk → bar. Open from 19:00.
- Music but not a full dance floor → lounge. Reserve.
- You want to dance → club. Go after midnight.
- You want something that only exists in Korea → nightclub. But it is far from the centre, and you should know what 부킹 is before you go.
What is the difference between a nightclub and a club in Korea?
A club has a DJ and a dance floor, opens at 22:00 and closes at 06:00. A nightclub seats you with a waiter, has a live band, table service and 부킹 culture, opens at 19:00 and closes at 05:00. The names sound similar; the venues are not.
What time do clubs open in Seoul?
The most common opening time is 22:00, closing at 06:00. But the room does not fill until after midnight, so arriving at 22:00 usually means an empty floor.
What is 부킹 (booking)?
It is the system at Korean nightclubs where a waiter brings someone over from another table and introduces you. If you are not interested you tell the waiter rather than the person, so nobody is embarrassed.
How many clubs are there in Seoul?
Of the 205 venues KONA verifies across Seoul and Busan, 29 are clubs, 10 are nightclubs, 23 are lounges and the remaining 144 are bars. Seoul nightlife is overwhelmingly bar-led.
