Which neighbourhood should you go to?

There is no such thing as "Seoul nightlife." There are five or six completely different districts, and picking the wrong one wastes the night. What follows is based on where our 205 verified venues actually sit.

Hongdae — the club district

Mapo has 7 clubs, more than any other Seoul district. Entry is usually ₩10,000 and some doors are free before midnight. The crowd skews early twenties, and the night happens on the street as much as inside — this is a district you walk, not one you settle into.

Itaewon — the highest density

Yongsan holds 45 venues, comfortably the most in Seoul — 22 bars and 6 clubs. Everything is stacked on one hill, so the walking time between rooms is the shortest in the city. It is also where English works best.

Gangnam — where it costs

30 venues, and a distinctly different character. Weekend entry runs ₩20,000–35,000, the highest in Seoul, and table minimums start at ₩500,000. Big rooms, dressed-up crowds — and men without a table can be turned away after midnight.

One correction worth making: Gangnam is not where the nightclubs are. The 10 we list sit in outer districts like Geumcheon, Nowon, Jungnang, Saha and Dongnae.

Seongsu — a bar district

Seongdong has 20 venues, 13 of them bars. This is not a club district — it is a sitting-down district, largely in converted warehouses. It does not run especially late, so it works best as a place to start before moving on.

Euljiro — pocha and back alleys

Jung-gu holds 15 venues. Print shops and hardware stores by day, bars by night. There are almost no signs — you navigate by address, and that is the point. Prices here are among the most reasonable in Seoul.

Busan — Seomyeon and Gwangalli

Busan has 52 venues. Seomyeon holds 20 and functions as Busan’s Hongdae — the clubs are here. Gwangalli has 14 and is where you drink looking at the sea and the bridge. Haeundae has 10 and is quieter, with more hotel bars.

• You want to dance → Hongdae. Most clubs, cheapest doors.
• You want to move a lot → Itaewon. Everything is walkable.
• You want to dress up → Gangnam. But think about a table first.
• You want to sit and talk → Seongsu or Euljiro.
• You want the sea → Gwangalli.
