Nobody here is being cold to you
Why the age question comes first, why strangers do not make small talk, and what a 헌팅포차 is. Eight things no guidebook explains.
The most common misreading visitors make in Korea is that people are cold. They are not cold — the room is running on rules nobody told you about, and once you know them the same room reads completely differently.
01 · "How old are you?" is a grammar question
Korean has two full speech modes — 존댓말 (polite) and 반말 (casual). Until they know your age, they literally cannot choose a verb ending. They are not judging you. They are trying to conjugate.
02 · Strangers do not make small talk
In the US small talk signals friendliness. In Korea a stranger opening a conversation usually means a sales pitch, a religious recruit, or a scam — so the default response is a wall. Silence in a lift is not coldness. It is the norm.
03 · It happens group to group
Solo-to-solo approaches are rare and read as aggressive. The standard unit is two on two or three on three, and the conversation opens to the whole table. Going out alone is the single biggest reason visitors find this impossible here.
04 · There is an entire venue type for this
헌팅포차 ("hunting pocha") is a bar category built around meeting strangers. Staff move people between tables as part of the job. Walking in is itself the opt-in, so it works there. The same behaviour in a cocktail bar lands badly.
05 · At a nightclub, staff do it for you
부킹 is the system where a waiter walks someone over to your table and introduces you. It belongs to nightclubs — the ones that open at 19:00 — not to the dance clubs that open at 22:00. Not interested? You tell the waiter, not the person. Nobody loses face.
06 · Ask for Kakao, not a number
A phone number is heavy here. A KakaoTalk ID is the normal low-commitment exchange — and the fact that it can be quietly dropped later without a confrontation is exactly why people say yes to it.
07 · "Let’s grab food sometime" is goodbye
It is the exact equivalent of "we should hang out sometime." Polite closure, not an invitation. A real yes comes back with a day attached. Propose a specific day; if they do not pick one, that was the answer.
08 · No is quiet here
Rejection is usually indirect — "다음에요" (next time), going quiet on Kakao, turning back to their own group, an unanswered message. None of that is an opening to try harder. Reading it fast is the entire skill, and it is the one item on this list that is not optional.

Why do Koreans ask your age first?
Korean has two speech modes, polite and casual, and the speaker cannot choose a verb ending without knowing your relative age. It is a grammatical necessity, not a judgement.
What is a 헌팅포차?
It is a Korean bar category built around meeting strangers. Staff move people between tables as part of the service, and walking in is itself understood as opting in.
How do you exchange contacts in Korea?
People exchange KakaoTalk IDs rather than phone numbers. It is lower commitment and easy to let lapse, which is precisely why people agree to it.
